Bright Ideas and Dead Ends: ELT as it was, is now (and might be in the future)

(Rob Dean, Pearson)

For Lower-Secondary School Teachers    For Upper-Secondary School Teachers

This talk will take the form of a light hearted journey through the last 100 or so years of English Language Teaching – from the grammar translation methods of the 19th century all the way to the task based and the lexical approaches of the 21st. Our journey will look at how methodologies and ideas were born and developed into what we use today - or in some cases quite rightly confined to the dustbins of history. We will conclude by speculating what the future might hold in terms of language teaching methodology. Of particular relevance today with so much teaching being conducted online is the impact of technology – does it change the methodology?

‘Do you speak English?’ Learning to actually communicate in real world situations and improving students’ fluency, accuracy and confidence is the key goal in language learning. Therefore we’ll need regular opportunities for speaking practice as well as dedicated speaking lessons. The Focus 2nd Edition and High Note courses are designed to encourage your students to think, personalise content and speak. The dedicated speaking lessons and tasks help your students to have longer conversations in groups and pairs. This webinar will show you how to plan, teach and evaluate these longer speaking activities, helping you to overcome any obstacles to success. You’ll leave able to take full advantage of the content and get your students speaking.

Success In and Out of the Classroom

However, it is enriched with authentic BBC video content and more thorough Use of English preparation to offer everything teachers and students need to achieve success, in and out of the classroom. With Focus Second Edition students will be strong in all language and life skills and well prepared for achieving great exam results. This session is going to explore all the different features Focus Second Edition offers to keep your students engaged and motivated.
